Watershed Condition Status – Water Safety

Issued June 28, 2017 @ 2:30 pm

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority would like to issue a watershed conditions statement to residents in regard to current watershed conditions.

A series of low pressure systems are tracking through the province, intermittently, Wednesday to Saturday. This weather pattern results in a highly unsettled weather conditions in the area and is likely to bring rain and thunderstorm through this period and beyond. Rainfall will likely begin Wednesday afternoon in the range 20 to 25 mm. Added thunderstorm anywhere from 10 to 15 mm could drive rainfall amounts from 30 to 40 mm in isolated locations.

Unsettled weather coupled with rain and thunderstorms can bring additional 10 to 20mm of rainfall on Thursday. Friday’s forecast calls for 10 to 15 mm of rainfall. Additional 10 to 15 mm due to thunderstorm is also forecast with this system. Unsettled conditions will persist into Saturday and possibly into the weekend with additional rainfall amounts in the 20 to 25 mm range. At present time, there is uncertainty in the forecast amounts and locations due to the unsettled nature of the approaching systems.

Currently, Local rivers, creeks and streams are flowing at normal levels. Continued rainfall and thunderstorm will cause levels and flows to rise across the watershed. There may be localized flooding in areas with poor drainage.

The flood control channels owned and maintained by the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority are currently flowing at normal levels. The flood control channels will experience a rise in water levels. It is important to remember that the water in rivers, streams and the channels will be fast flowing during and after the rainfall events.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority will continue to closely monitor stream flows across the watershed.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority would like to extend a warning to residents and visitors to use extreme caution when close to rivers, creeks and streams. High water levels and flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery. Please keep children and pets away from fast flowing rivers and streams.

This statement is in effect until July 04, 2017.
