Mark Howson Appointed as New SPC Chair
Posted: Mar 20, 2017

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority is pleased to welcome Mark Howson as the new Source Protection Committee Chair. Mr. Howson was appointed by the Honourable Glen R. Murray, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change.

“I am honoured to be joining the Sault Ste. Marie Region Source Protection Committee (SPC). Our Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change Approved Source Protection Plan must now be implemented to assure long term high quality drinking water sources are available for residents of Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area. I hope my efforts as Chair will contribute to the continued success of our Source Protection Committee”, said Howson.

Howson replaces former Chair, Peter McLarty. The recruitment process for a new local Chair was initiated though the provincial government, Public Appointment Secretariat.

Mr. Howson’s 22 years on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Municipal Water Association and over two decades of work with the Sault Ste. Marie Public Utilities Commission brings with it a significant familiarity with local water treatment and distribution.

The Board of Directors of the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) appreciate the appointment of Mr. Howson to his new role and look forward to the continued excellent working relationship between the Source Protection Committee and the SSMRCA.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Source Protection Plan was approved on March 12, 2015 and became effective on July 1, 2015 as part of the Clean Water Act, 2006.

Under the Clean Water Act, 2006 municipalities and stakeholders worked together to develop local watershed-based Source Protection Plans. Source Protection Plans protect the sources of municipal drinking water supplies for municipal drinking water systems.
