Changes to the Conservation Authorities Act

MOVING FORWARD

Update December 18, 2020

A new working group is being formed after Bill 229 was proclaimed into law on December 8, 2020. The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority welcomes the recent announcement that a provincial working group will be established. The working group will provide a way for conservation authorities to formally share their knowledge and best practices from almost 70 years of successful watershed management in Ontario. PROVINCIAL CHANGES TO CONSERVATION AUTHORITIES ACT WILL HAVE NEGATIVE IMPACT ON WATERSHED MANAGEMENT

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority's (SSMRCA) role in protecting and managing the local environment is being threatened by proposed changes to the Conservation Authorities Act and Planning Act. Ontario’s 36 conservation authorities are important agencies that help protect Ontario’s environment. Our science-based watershed information helps steer development to appropriate places where it will not harm the environment or create risks to people and property.

WHAT'S CHANGED?

Within the Province’s latest budget bill (bill 229), issued November 5, were a number of changes to the Conservation Authorities Act and the Planning Act that will limit conservation authorities’ role in protecting Ontario’s environment and ensuring people and property are safe from natural hazards. Public consultation is not required on these proposals as it has been incorporated as part of the budget.
