Board & Administration

The SSMRCA has provided watershed management services to its member municipalities since it was established in 1963.
The SSMRCA is a member of Conservation Ontario, an organization representing all 36 Conservation Authorities in the province of Ontario.

Board of Directors

A 5 member board of directors collectively provides direction and lead the Conservation Authority through its policies, programs and budgets. Municipalities appoint representatives to the the board. Most appointees are also municipal councillors but citizen appointees can be board members.
In February 2004, the City of Sault Ste. Marie and Township of Prince signed an agreement that increased the number of Board members from four to five members to be appointed by the City of Sault Ste. Marie. The agreement is available for viewing and/or download at the bottom of this page.
The board meets monthly, typically on the third Tuesday of each month. The board agendas and minutes are available to view on our Board Meetings page. Regular Board meetings are open to the public, In-Committee meetings are closed to the public and are required in order for Board Members to consider confidential information.

The SSMRCA Strategic Plan was approved in 2016 which includes mandate, vision and mission statements.

Legislation and Regulations

The SSMRCA operates under the Conservation Authorities Act and administers two provincial regulations:
  • O. Reg. 176/06 - Regulation of Development, Interference with Wetlands and Alterations to Shorelines and Watercourses
  • Regulation 134 - Conservation Areas - Sault Ste. Marie Region

Administrative By-Law

The passing of the new Conservation Authorities Act by the Ontario legislature in December of 2017 resulted in many modifications of the previous Act. Under the new legislation there is the requirement for all conservation authorities to establish a new administrative by-law by December 2018.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority passed Third Reading of it’s Administrative By-law 01/2018. The By-law outlines the governance of the SSMRCA by its Board members.

Administrative By-law 01/2018 takes effect August 30, 2018 and is available to view below.

The daily operations of the SSMRCA are overseen by General Manager, Corrina Barrett
The SSMRCA has 5 full-time Staff Members.
