SOURCE PROTECTION PLAN UPDATE APPROVED

FOR SAULT STE. MARIE REGION

Sault Ste. Marie – A updated plan to protect the sources of municipal drinking water in the Sault Ste. Marie Region has been approved by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) announced today.

The Source Protection Plan was first approved on March 10, 2015. The MECP has specified an effective date for the plan of July 1, 2015. Most of the policies contained within the plan apply to relatively small and specific areas surrounding municipal water supplies. The policies encourage best management practices, risk reduction measures and, in certain limited circumstances, prohibition of certain activities.

“As Chair of the SSMRCA, the board would like to express its gratitude to the partners who worked with us to attain this objective.  Including the staff of SSMRCA, City of Sault Ste. Marie staff, the Township of Prince, the PUC and the MECP.” said Enzo Palumbo

“The Risk Management Inspector and Risk Management Official are ready to implement the updated plan.  The committee will continue to review proposed changes to the Directors Technical Rules to update the plan as required,”  said Corrina Barrett, SSMRCA General Manager

The SSMRCA is a community-based agency whose mandate includes flood control, flood management, flood warning and integrated watershed management; one of Ontario’s 36 Conservation Authorities.

The Drinking Water Source Protection program at the SSMRCA which facilitated the development of the plan was directed and funded by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks under the Clean Water Act, 2006. More information is available at https://ssmrca.ca/source-water-protection/ .
