Watershed Conditions Update – Flood Watch

Issued April 14, 2023@ 12:30:00 pm.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority is issuing a Watershed Conditions Update – Flood Watch as of 12:30 p.m. today for residents of the Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township areas. Flood forecasting and warning are part of the Conservation Authority’s provincially mandated responsibilities. This statement is sent out so that residents can be informed and aware.

The current weather forecast indicates moderate rainfall on Sunday, April 16th. The watershed area forecast indicates 15 - 25mm of rainfall for April 16-17. Daytime temperatures are forecasted in the range of 17 to 210C for Saturday and Sunday.

Snowpack and water equivalent or the amount of water contained in the snowpack are still at significant levels within the upper reaches of the watershed. Recent above normal warm temperatures and forecasted rain will continue to impact the melt of existing snowpack. Currently, local rivers, creeks, and streams are flowing at normal levels. Snowmelt, warm temperatures, and rainfall will impact the levels and flows to rise across the watershed. There may be localized flooding in low-lying areas.

The flood control channels owned and maintained by the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority are currently flowing at normal levels. The flood control channels will experience a rise in water levels. It is important to remember that the water in rivers, streams, and channels is cold and fast flowing.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority will continue to closely monitor stream flows across the watershed and update this message based on the changing weather/streamflow conditions.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from the flood control channels and all waterways. Flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery. Please keep children and pets away from waterways during this time.
