Watershed Condition Status – Water Safety Statement

Issued April 25, 2023 @ 11:45 a.m.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority is issuing a Water Safety Statement for Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township areas regarding current watershed conditions and forecasted weather. Flood forecasting and warning are part of the Conservation Authority’s provincially mandated responsibilities. This statement is sent out so that residents can be informed and aware.

The current weather forecast indicates light rainfall (5 mm) on Thursday, April 27th. Area watershed forecast indicates 15 – 25 mm of rainfall for April 29 - 30. Daytime temperatures are forecasted in the range of 5 to 13 0C for the next five days.

Snowpack and water equivalent or the amount of water contained in snowpack are still present at the upper reaches of the watershed. Currently, local rivers, creeks, and streams are flowing at normal levels. Snowmelt, warm temperatures, and rainfall will impact the levels and flows to rise across the watershed. There may be localized flooding in low-lying areas due to moderate precipitation forecasted for the weekend.

The flood control channels owned and maintained by the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority are currently flowing at normal levels. The flood control channels will experience a rise in water levels. It is important to remember that the water in rivers, streams, and channels is cold and fast flowing.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority will continue to closely monitor stream flows across the watershed and update this message based on the changing weather and/or streamflow conditions.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from the flood control channels and all waterways. Flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery. Please keep children and pets away from waterways during this time.

This statement is in effect until (or updated before) May 3, 2023.
