Watershed Condition Status – Flood Outlook Statement

Issued June 21, 2024 @ 3:00 pm

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority is issuing a flood outlook statement to residents regarding current watershed conditions. Flood forecasting and warning are part of the Conservation Authority’s provincially mandated responsibilities. This statement is sent out so that residents can be informed and aware.

The current weather forecast anticipates significant rainfall with accumulations ranging from 50 to 75 mm, primarily attributed to thunderstorm activity. Localized areas may experience even higher precipitation totals, especially if multiple thunderstorms develop. This weather event is expected to commence tonight and persist through the weekend.

As of the latest observations, local rivers, creeks, and streams are currently flowing at normal levels across the watershed. However, anticipated heavy rainfall in the upcoming forecast is expected to elevate water levels and flow rates throughout these water bodies. There may be localized flooding in areas susceptible to poor drainage.

Currently, the flood control channels managed by the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority are operating at normal levels. However, due to the anticipated heavy rainfall in the forecast, these channels are expected to experience a rise in water levels. It is important to remember that the water in rivers, streams and the channels will be fast flowing during and following the rainfall event.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority will continue to closely monitor stream flows across the watershed.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from the flood control channels and all waterways. Flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery. Please keep children and pets away from waterways during this time.

This statement is in effect until June 25, 2024.
